It runs through your veins, the sight of it can make some squeamish or even faint, doctors require small amounts of it to learn more about your health, it is a metaphor for familial bond, it can play a leading role in a gory movie; it is blood all the same. This is the subject of Five Quarts by Bill Hayes. As we venture through this text together you will be asked to consider the subject matter of blood in a number of ways, not only as the author presents it but also its meaning in your own life and overall understanding of the world. To begin this mainly digital and at times real-time conversation, I ask you to respond to the following prompt: "When I think of blood I..."Consider this as a free-write prompt and allow your initial thoughts or ideas to lead to other ideas. Also think about how personal experiences, ideas in popular culture and what you have been taught in and out of the classroom about blood. Let your thoughts and ideas flow like blood (pun intended). Post your comment before Wednesday, Feb 13 and respond to the posts of at least two other classmates no later than Friday, Feb 15.
When I think of blood I think of the blood that flows through my veins. I see blood when I get a cut. It is a reddish color that taste kind of salty. Blood reminds me of vampires. The reason why because folk tales depict vampires as blood sucking creatures. When I think of blood I think of the black doctor who gave the first successful blood transfusion. Also, every time I see blood it replays the image of me crying when the doctor said I had to draw blood. When i see some one bleed it reminds me of the summer days when blood would come down gushing from my nose. Lastly, when i think of blood I think about gladiators who drink the blood of the people they just killed.
ReplyDeleteWhen I think of blood I think of the blood dropped by my ancestors as they struggled for independence. Blood reminds me of my first wounds. my blood is also my lineage. blood is something i need to stay alive, it is the essence that keep my body alive. i remember the sheep's blood spurting out on EID AL-ADHA while my uncle was cutting the sheep's throat. when i think of blood i also think of the Dracula movies i watched and vampire myths i read. After all, when i think of blood i think and remember of many things related to life, religion, love ,health, sacrifices and many other factors.
ReplyDeleteHow did you feel when your uncle was cutting out the sheep's throat?
Deletei felt both sad and happy when my uncle was cutting out the sheep's throat because the sheep's died for a good purpose and also i was eager to eat the sheep's meat.
DeleteI admire the fact that you talked about blood relating to your ancestors and the way in which they struugled for indepenndence.
DeleteWhen I think of blood I think about a life or death situation reason being blood is one of the most essential substances that are needed for our body to maintain us as we are alive. In order to keep our bodies healthy by us maintaining it properly. Whether you give it or take it, life is still within it. Blood reminds me of childbirth a new gift of life that portrays love and passion. By watching movies that are consisted of blood such as: Twilight that vampires are related to intense hatred and horror. Blood reminded me of the Bible the sacrifice which Jesus made by dying for us on the cross to save his people from sin and from watching these documentaries depicts the importance of religion. I remember being in Jamaica and I killed my first chicken, there was blood everywhere. Nevertheless blood can be used in numerous ways depending on the context from love to hatred, from life to death and in other aspects.
ReplyDeleteHow did you feel when you killed your first chicken? Did it mean anything to you?
Deletein my opinion i would have felt sick, im excited to see a little blood but too much would make me keel over and most likely upchuck
DeleteWell I felt like a serial killer Sarye but I felt guilty for killing the innocent chicken but it didn't really mean anything to me other than gaining the experience being with my cousins and seeing them selling it...
DeleteYes Markel,it does fell that way at first but afterwards I got use to seeing it.
When I think of blood, I think about the genes that run through my veins that helped make me the person I am today. In my eyes, blood is not just the red that most people imagine; such as a red rose, lipstick, or an apple. Blood is a much richer and glorified version of red. I tend to contradict myself at times because I do not enjoy the sight of another human's blood when it is spilling out in gallons. I remember watching my mother receive a shot in arm a while back, and it made my heart feel heavy and brought tears to my eyes. Yes, I know my reaction was dramatic; plus it wasn't that much blood that came out after the shot. However, I just didn't enjoy the sight of my mother experiencing any type of pain, whether it be a pinch or a punch. I realized that the sight of blood sickens me when it is drawn from violent actions. However, when it is shown to me for educational or personal purposes, I am more open to seeing it.
ReplyDeleteWhen I think of blood, I don't just think of the liquid. I think about how it has traveled through generations of other people, just to flow through my veins. I think about how it matters to me whether it was drawn violently or not. When I think of blood, I think of me.
So if we were to disect a living animal how would you feel ?
Deleteactually, sarye, how did you feel when we dissected the pig? did you feel appalled, sick, ill, or excited?
DeleteTo brietnni: it depends on the purpose of my dissection. If it was for educational purposes, then I would understand. However, if it was just for evil pleasure, then I wouldn't like it
DeleteTo Markel: I wasn't excited. I don't see the joy in cutting open an animal. I was only sickened by the smell. I felt kinda bad because I knew that it was a fetal pig; I was told that it was taken from the mother's stomach and it reminded me of abortions. I felt like the pig didn't get a chance to live its life.
DeleteI wasn't as disgusted as I could have been because the pig had already been dead long enough to have no blood in its body.
one more question, since the pig had no blood of course your feelings for cutting it will dissipate, but then again, did you think about how it live before, that it could have lived a good life and became every pigs dream, bacon XD?
DeleteThis reminds me of the disection of the pig during the summer. I hope we do it again before the school year is over!
Delete>.>. you have a strange mind>.>
DeleteTo Markel: I did not think of the life that the pig had before because it was aborted. I assume that its life would have ended miserably anyway considering the fact that people constantly kill animals for food and other reasons
DeleteWhen I think of blood I think about a scene in a movie where a man is being killed. human life being taken away , blood slowly pouring out while someones life is inching away , the scene always take my emotions on a rollercoaster , sad , appectance then happinesses . when i think about blood i think about human life and how short it is.Blood is running in our veins and helps us survive sooner o later were going to die and our blood will deplete, when we do we know there is another taking our place
ReplyDeleteyou know, your blood doesnt deplete from your ody when you die. you may have lost some when you died, but it doesnt all deplete at that specific mome :)
Deleteyes it does they have to keep the blood from your body when you die
Delete??? what do you mean. are you trying to say they take te blood away from your body? matter of fact, to make this more clear when you die and is buried in the groung your circulatory system stops and your blood starts to dry out and then in a few moths you will be a skeleton!
Deletewhen I think of blood I think of life and death. to me, blood is your life and your story teller. your blood holds a limitless amont of stories to be told about your family history. I think of the many ancestors before me, about how they died and gave legacy to a new generation. when most people see blood they become squeamich, or ill. when i see blood it feels like i just been given a dose of ecstacy, it excites me,thinking of how this used to be apart of my body, that it circulated throughout my veins. in my case, i like to seek action. i like to feel the adrenaline pumping my body, making it stronger, react quicker, and move faster. it exhilerates me. blood is my lifeline, my history, my body, and my protection.
ReplyDeleteWell in your response it talks about the excitment of you seeing blood, but is their a fear within you when the word blood appears or if you see it for yourself?
DeleteWhen I think of blood the first thing that comes to mind is the thickness of the blood. The different color, and its smell. I also think of evilness. Such as, the Devil, halloween, Zombies and also, Vampires. Horror movies includes a lot of blood, for the fact that memebers of this particular movie are killing others. It is what makes the movie interesting and creepy. As a child I never liked the color red. When I thought of red it reminds me of heat, madness and fear. It could also represent a womans fierce beauty. It is only now that I started to like red. For example, on Christmas I went to the nail salon and did my nails in red.I had seconds thoughts about it but it actually goes with my complexion. Now every time i go to the nail salon i get my nails done in red, lol. Is something wrong with me?
ReplyDeleteDoes the color red mean more to you than just liking the color itself? Does it represent anything for you?
DeleteWhen I think of blood i think of hurt, pain, gory , and i get a warm sensiation in my body. It makes me feel a bit weird inside, but not to the point where I cant take it. when watching movies you get this thought that when you think of blood it means either someone has been killed or injured but never does anyone think about the scientic portion of blood. Maybe the thought of blood can be interesting to some because you can picture the many things that can help you that blood has to offer.Ever since I was a child i have been always scared of needles. The pain to me is a feeling I could never get over and i would never think about the blood. That was just a little blood, I didnt really care because I knew it was used for my health. Anyways, From reading the beginning three chapters, I feel as though it doesnt really capture my attention, but maybe when i read along it would have something to offer.
ReplyDeletewhy does blood give u a warm sensation ? weirdo
DeleteWhen I think Of Blood I feel sick. Blood is usually not associated with good things. Doctors take blood to see if something is wrong and its also seen when someone is injured or dies.Blood is usually the main theme in horror movies and is why most people watch them. It gives a certain thrill. Personally i like watching horror movies because i like being scared. However, blood is the grossos brutal trruth of why people may like zombies, vampires and other movie thrillers. Blodd is creepy and gross. Especially if its mine!!!
ReplyDeletehave you ever had any experiences that dealth with blood?
DeleteWhen I think of blood I think of both life and death. Blood is very important factor in your body because it is what keep your heart and veins pumping and flowing. This also relates to when the doctors draw blood samples from you or when you get a cut. When I got a cut in the 8th grade, I had to suck my own blood on the way to the nurse ofice because it was bleeding quickly. It tasted kind of weird until you get use to it because it haad that salty taste in it. I really do not like being around blood because I feel a type of way. When I think of blood, I also think about the mythical creatures like vampires. Since vampires suvive on blood, that is the first thing that comes to mind.
ReplyDeleteso if anychance that something like that happens again would you do it once more? how did you feel when you sucked your blood
Deletewhat type of way do you feel?
DeleteWhen I think of blood I think of someone getting a cut or giving birth and etc. I also think of the things that during slavery when they when they got their life taken for us to the life we have. I would always remember when i first saw blood i was freaking out because i wanted to know why it was red, but as i got older i realize that your blood is their to protect us. also when i think of blood i always wonder how doctors and crime investigators deal with been around blood all the time, but looking at myself i want to be a doctor so for me i have to get use to been around blood all the time; By watching movies and going to the hospital i got use to been around blood all the time and IT IS AMAZING....
ReplyDeletewhy is it amazing?
Deletetell me how is being aroung blood amazing.
DeleteIt is amazing because i get to see how blood are use to do many different things.
DeleteBlood is considered as weird, intresting, intence, and bassically horrible. Blood is apart of our life and how we live. In my eyes, boold is digusting. Blood reminds me of when my moms gave birth to me; when I was in her stomach relaxing and kicking her. Blood reminds me of zomobies chasing after human for there human blood.Blood reminds me of vampires from The Twightlight Saga. Blood can be a touchy subject. Blood is important to the human body. How was blood created? How is blood develop? How does doctors, nurse and scientist use it to create medicines and work on experiment? Blood can also be intresting to the human body, but can be yet digusting. Blood is not just about the red color; blood is a liquid substance that is flowed throughout the body. Blood makes us a human begin. Blood is important, and without it there would be no living form on earth
ReplyDeleteHow do you think it is possible to create medicines from blood?
DeleteYou think of a lot of things when blood comes to your mind? What made you think of Twilight
DeleteWhen I think of blood it reminds me of my painful bruises. It reminds me of my childhood memories and the injuries that i endured while playing soccer. It reminds of vampire movies and the book Fledgling. Blood can be the symbol of life and death, as you need it to survive and if you lose too much of it you will die. It can also symbolize bonds, like blood brothers and family.
ReplyDeleteWhen I think of blood I think pain and discomfort. I think of that because you usually see blood when you are hurt from a cut or something. Blood also makes me think of vampires and certain insects such as mosquitoes . They are known for blood sucking so thats why when i hear of blood i think of them as well. Blood is important to us though. Without blood we wouldnt be alive.
ReplyDeleteI think of vampires and mosquitos off the back once i think of blood to
DeleteBlood can be known as something good for example having a new born baby, it may be painful but it isn't negative. It seems like you feel blood is negative when you say " when i think of blood i think pain and discomfort."
DeleteWhen I think of blood, I think of happiness and love. This is the bond you have between your family and friends; whoever you are close or related to, you are connected by blood. Blood can be more than a physical relationship, but it can also be considered emotionally. But blood can also be used for good purposes, for example, blood transfusions. It can be good to draw blood to donate to others, which I might do, because I enjoy taking needles.
ReplyDeletewhy does blood make you feel that way?
DeleteWhen i think of blood many things come to mind.Blood reminds me of the brutal thing the slave went through.Blood also remind me of the painful cuts i went through. The major thing that comes to mind is blood Transfusion because it is very important to our health and survival.I think of the way the blood flows through the vains and the body. I also think of Khaled Hosseini"the kite runner.
ReplyDeletewhat makes you think of blood in he kite runner ?

ReplyDeleteWhen I think of blood I think about the human body and how the body works. Blood is a rich fluid that moves throughout our body and helps transport oxygen and wastes. Blood is sometimes not valued as some people should value it. Blood is shed every day and precious blood of individuals are spilled due to violence and other natural causes. When I think of blood I also think about pain. Blood can be involved with pain at times and when someone is in pain or hurt they are most likely bleeding. Blood is all around us in a weird way because everyday we, as human beings, walk around blood filled in our bodies with different and/or similar blood types.
ReplyDeleteWhen I think,of blood I get scared.when I see it,i feel dizzy and light-headed.when blood is removed from the body,it tends to make the body weak.the purpose of the blood is to flow through the body,to help function and maintain the human body. But it's funny, blood could represent life and death.its valuable, able to save ones life as well as take ones life...crazy
ReplyDeleteWhy do you get scared?
DeleteWhen I think of blood I think of falling off my bicycle as a child. I think of a vampire sucking the neck of his/her victims.I think of excruciating pain depending on the injury.I also think blood is the red liquid/nutrient circulating in the heart, arteries and viens.
ReplyDeletewhen i hear the word blood , many thoughts comes to mind i think about pain, being hurt to see your insides spill in front of you. In all actuality blood is important and plays a big part in life.In other words in order to live you must have blood.I reminisce about my experience with blood; i was playing basketball one day with a group of friends and end up falling hitting my head on concrete. There wasn't any pain but seeing you blood run down your right eye is frighting, but at the same time i felt cool . Blood represents life and death and in this novel it is shown throughout the whole book.
ReplyDeleteWhy did you feel cool?
DeleteWhat is you guy's personal thoughts about this novel? and what is your reasoning for this opinion
ReplyDeleteWhen I hear the word blood I think about doctors and surgeries. I think of child birth & fights. Blood can represent good or bad things. In Different cultures red worn at weddings is a good thing. In ancient times blood shed was considered a gift to the gods.
ReplyDeleteWhen i think about blood. The first thing that comes to mind is a human. Because we are made up of blood. Without blood we could not exist. Without blood we couldnt be HUMAN. Blood in so many ways is icky. To me, unless its my own blood, the site of blood makes my stomach turn. I believe its because of the smell. Every persons blood has its own smell. Which is another thing that makes each person unique. Blood can be nasty to some but interesting to others, for what ever reason. At the end of the day our blood is still what makes us human.
ReplyDeleteHow can Blood be nasty?
DeleteWhen I think of blood I imagine a graphic I saw of red blood cells moving through a vein. Then I imagine spilled, red, glistening blood on a concrete floor, noticing the contrast between the light brown concrete and the vibrantly colored red blood. It doesn't really scare me, I've seen a bit of blood, but what I hate is seeing my own blood being taken during a blood test of some kind. I feel as if they are taking away my life force as the blood trickles up that clear wire and into a tube, where it is collected and taken away, farther from my body.
ReplyDeleteI like this Dale, I like your connection. when you think of your blood going further away from your body where do think its going? have you ever though that they was using it for something that you was unaware of?
DeleteIt's just the depressing knowledge that they are taking a part of me away and I can't get it back. It's like giving somebody your child, I'm not even sure if they are doing what they say they are doing with so much blood.
DeleteWhen I think of the word blood I think of pain, suffering, struggling. I also think about something red, thick, rich and something that is needed to survive. Blood.... Hmmmm.... I'm thinking about a lil girl crying blood because she don't know where she is from and she is alone in her own world with no one to turn to to get an idea from. I know I'm weird but that's what I think about. Ahhh here we go... I'm closing my eyes and I'm thinking about the word blood...... I see blood splattered on the street with a body laid across it, laying there helpless or even dead... And yea that person can be a loved one... Well yeah that's what I think about when I think about the word BLOOD!!!
ReplyDeleteWhen I think of the word blood I think of injury. Sometimes death or suffering. Blood is red, thick and a necessity. in my mind im thinking about a person crying blood because they were lost and had no sense of direction. Blood is a very common thing. I see it everywhere. I see it when someone dies, killing insects, animals and etc. BLOOD BLOOD BLOOD a part of everyones everyday life.
